Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs, or Cavies to give them their official name, are classified as an exotic pet in the UK. They are also classed as rodents with their closed relative being a Capybara! GP were originally found in Peru, SA however they are usually bred for food. You will not find a GP in the wild as they are now bred purely as domestic pets.

Getting a GP requires a lot of research before hand as, like rabbits, they are very misunderstood creatures. Make sure you have a local “exotic” vet who would be able to treat you GP before you get one as you may think your local vets would treat any animal however that is not the case! You wouldn’t want your pig to get sick and then find out that you cannot get it the help it needs.

Guinea pigs are one of very few animals that cannot produce their own vitamin C and therefore need a diet that consists of high fibre, vitamin C rich greens and a vitamin c supplement. Supplements can be given in the form of tablet or liquid.

My Guinea Pig History

My history of guinea pigs is minimal as they two I have now are my first ( I had one when I was about 8 but my neighbour ended up taking him on as we didn’t have the time for him – example of bad research!) so the two I have now are classes as my first!

We got Ben and Jerry in June 2019. You can find out more about them in their “come meet us” sections!
